LETTER FROM MRS. MACY
Dear CHPCS Parents and Guardians:
The North Clackamas School District (NCSD) is informing you of two matters, which we believe deserve serious attention. Our goal is not to alarm, but rather to provide information that you may find helpful in having a healthy dialogue with your student.
Specifically, a new Netflix series, “13 Reasons Why,” is becoming increasingly popular with youth. Based on a book, the series depicts suicide, sexual assault, and bullying, among other topics. Additionally, there is a game circulating via social media, called “Blue Whale Challenge,” which encourages participants to engage in dangerous activities over the course of fifty days culminating with suicide. To date, NCSD is not aware of any students participating in this game.
Collectively, these developments underscore the importance of having meaningful conversations with your children to help them navigate the threats to their physical and mental health. Such discussions are particularly important for those children who are socially isolated and emotionally vulnerable.
The physical and emotional safety of each student is NCSD’s highest priority. For this reason, we share the following resources with you out of an abundance of concern for your child’s health:
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-TALK (8255)
- Oregon Youth Line – 1-877-968-8491 or text teen2teen to 839863
- Clackamas County Crisis Line – 503-655-8585
- Trevor Project Lifeline (LGBTQ) - 1-866-488-7386
By working together, we can address the often difficult issues that can put our children at risk for self-harm. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this further.
