Falcon Flash: Week of October 13, 2016

13 October 2016 Written by   Debra Dietch, Communication Coordinator

In this issue: WEATHER ALERT/ TODAY! Last day for book fair / Puppet theatre / Spanish penpals / Calendar correction / After school robotics / Parent teacher conference info

Starting today, weather forecasts for our area are predicting a period of extraordinarily active weather with the potential for heavy rain, flooding, and a highly dangerous windstorm. Please be prepared and have a safe weekend!

Our fall book fair will be open today until 4:45 pm. Come by and stock up for the season’s reading. Blustery days are great days for curling up with a good book!

Tuesday, November 1st, 10-11am in the Gym

Maestra Novela invites all Falcon families to join us for a visiting shadow puppet show. The performance will be mostly in English with some Spanish words, so everyone will appreciate and understand the play. All are invited!

We have a very exciting partnership developing with a school in Tlaxcala, Mexico and Spanish students have an OPTIONAL opportunity to participate in a penpal exchange with students in Mexico.

Information about the school:

Centro Educativo Crecer is a private, IB (International Baccalaureate) school serving Pre-K through high school. The name translates to Center of Learning and Growth. Students take classes in both English and Spanish.

What you need to do:

If you are not interested in participating, no action is needed.

If you would like your child to participate, please email me the email address that you authorize for communication with the student in Mexico. Feel free to include what kind of penpal would work best for your child (i.e., boy vs girl, interested in soccer, etc.) and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Any student can request to be a penpal, however I think it would work best for students at least 3rd grade and up.

What happens next:

The instructor in Mexico and I will match students with penpals and they can begin to exchange letters.

Once students are comfortable (and at parent's discretion), Facetime/Skype would be a great opportunity to get to know their penpal better, see a place they might potentially visit, and practice oral and listening skills.

My hope is this partnership will eventually lead to an exchange program.
