Campers at Cascade Heights Public Charter School have been meeting for two weeks Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for the last two weeks to build their own boat. During this time six lucky students have participated in The Building to Teach program, designed by the Alexandria Seaport Foundation under a grant from the Office of Naval Research, which creates a hands-on learning environment for 5th through 8th graders to learn and reinforce math skills.
Using the Common Core Standards, the program offers students a range of activities supporting basic math skills, fractions, decimals, measurement, ratios, percents, problem solving, basic geometry, and algebra. The activities include exercises with paper and pencil, wooden blocks, framing squares, compasses, chalk lines, and straight edges. Some involve determining features of the students' environment. The last session on August 2nd will be at a local pond where we will celebrate and sail in our completed boat!
