Falcon Flash: Week of February 2, 2017

01 February 2017 Written by   Debra Dietch, Communication Coordinator

In this issue: After school ativities cancelled on Thursday, Feb 2 / Sign up for conferences / PTA / February lunch menu posted / Spring book fair / Family reading night sign up open / Pancake breakfast tickets available / Informational meeting rescheduled / Lost & found / Exclusion day /

All students will be dismissed at 3:30pm

With snow in the forecast for Thursday, February 2, the decision has been made to cancel all afternoon activities. Students will be dismissed at 3:30pm. Staff will be excused and the campus closed at 3:45pm.

Our most important consideration is the safety of our families and staff. We draw families from a wide area and we understand your local situations can be different so if you ever believe it is not safe for you to drive to school you are welcome to make a family decision to keep your child home, or wait until the roads in your area are clear. If inclement weather is threatening, you may also decide to pick your child up early, even if school has not announced early release. In any of these circumstances, please remember to stay in communication with Mrs. Marlatt in the main office (503-659-5593).

Don’t forget to sign up for a conference with your child(ren)’s home room teacher(s) if you haven’t already!

Please note: In the event North Clackamas announces a school closure on a day conferences are scheduled, they will be cancelled.

Sign up for Chinese students:

Below is the sign up link for conferences with Wenny Laoshi on 2/3 and 2/10. She is looking forward to discussing your children's progress in Chinese with you!

Do you want to support your child’s education, help the school, be informed, meet new people, feel connected, and make your voice heard? Support the CHPCS PTA!

The PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) promotes the positive growth of the Cascade Heights Public Charter School community, via meaningful and effective events. We enhance opportunities for our students, encourage positive involvement from all families in our school community, and work to strengthen communication between parents and staff. Regular PTA Meetings are on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the Library.

Monday, February 27 – Thursday, March 2

Our spring Book Fair will be open in the mornings from 7:30 to 9am and in the afternoons from 2:30 to 4:45pm. It will also be open during lunch on certain days. TBD.

With many thanks to Mrs. Langston and Mrs. Zundel, our Book Fair divas, for all their hard work!

Thursday, March 2, beginning at 6:30pm

Please join us for our annual celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and enjoy an evening of free literary fun with your children!

Family Reading Night activities are led by our staff. Each teacher reads from a favorite book and then leads a project inspired by the story and designed for family members to do together. This year’s books include, but are not limited to: Monster Trouble, Rainbow Fish, Eloise in Paris, Johnny Appleseed, A Wocket in My Pocket, The Mysterious Tadpole, One Plastic Bag, Oh The Thinks You Can Think, How I Became a Pirate, and One Green Apple.

Each adult/child pair may sign up for two sessions. The first session starts at 6:30pm and the second starts at 7:00pm. Please note that folks MUST sign up beforehand, and children MUST be accompanied by an adult in each session. Younger siblings are also welcome (just be sure to sign them up, too!). Register at

At 7:30, we will all gather in the cafeteria for birthday cake.

Back by popular demand: During the school day, children may dress as their favorite literary character (some restrictions apply). Teachers will clarify expectations for their class, but your child should 1) bring a copy of the book, 2) be prepared to read a favorite passage out of it, 3) be able to engage in regular learning and physical activity in their costume. While comic books, Disney books, and graphic novels are great fun to read, we request that your child choose a more "literary" literary character.

An 8th Grade Fundraiser

As many of you know, at Cascade Heights the traditional 8th grade end of year trip is to Ashland where students attend Shakespearean plays and visit a college campus. It is a highlight of the year and an amazing experience the children look forward to, so they work very hard at fundraising.

The upcoming pancake breakfast is a way for you and your family to support the 8th grade class and have an enjoyable morning visiting with other Falcon families – plus not have to clean up! The 8th graders will do that for you.

You must pre-purchase a ticket to attend. Tickets are $10 for: pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, milk, juice, and soft drinks. They can be purchased from any 8th grade student or the office. Cash or checks accepted. Checks should be made out to Cascade Heights Public Charter School. There is a limit of 300 total tickets and we would love to sell out.

Thank you for your support!

Thursday, February 16, 6:30pm – 7:30pm

This normally happens in January, but was cancelled due to weather. If you know of a prospective family that is interested in hearing more about Cascade Heights, you may invite them to this meeting.

A pair of black framed glasses, in a case branded “Diesel,” were turned in to the office. If they are yours, please come and get them!

Wednesday, February 15

The date for Exclusion Day is set by the state. If you have received a letter from the state advising your child is not up to date on vaccines, please rectify before this date or your child will be excluded from school. There are no exceptions to this date.
