Dear Falcon Families,
My name is Sarah O’Malley and I am excited to be joining this learning community as your fifth grade teacher! We will have many opportunities to collaborate and get to know each other in the coming year, but here are some basics about me and what happens in my classroom.
I have quite a variety of educational experience! As a high school student in Portland, I was a mentor in a program for fifth grade girls to get them interested in careers in science. At Carleton College in Minnesota, I facilitiated a mentorship program and tutored high school students while getting BA in Political Science. Back at home, I received a Master’s Degree in Teaching from the University of Portland and did my student-teaching at Buckman Arts Focus Elementary and Mount Tabor Middle School. I earned my stripes teaching 7th and 8th grade at a challenging school in the Portland Public School District. My students and I went on field trips to the Oregon Historical Society and NW Children’s Theater. In the classroom, we focused on writing and multi-sensory learning. Working with children has been a life-long passion and I love being a teacher.
In my free time, I have a community garden plot where I anxiously await my first red tomatoes. My badly behaved Labrador is named after Ranier Maria Rilke, my favorite poet. I pursue my own creative writing and have a book club. I watched nearly every game of Women’s World Cup soccer. I bake pies, take garden photos, and travel when I get the chance.
I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged and that will be my first priority in the classroom. Parents, as the primary educators, will be asked to share their expertise as guest speakers and also help me to find the best way to teach their children. You will find that I am open to your input and quick to problem-solve when the need arises.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I am looking forward to a year filled with field trips, science experiments, mathematical explorations, dynamic literature study, historical projects, theater, and writing in every conceivable context.
Miss Sarah Jane O’Malley
